Teen misses job interview, sues prospective employer when it won’t hire him

Darren Mirren failed to show up for his job interview. Then he sued the prospective employer when he couldn’t find his way to the office.
Mirren, a 16-year-old from Glasgow, Scotland, filed an age-discrimination claim with the employment tribunal there. The tribunal threw out his claim, saying he wasn’t hired because he didn’t show up for the interview, not because of age discrimination, according to the newspaper, The Scotsman.
Spotless Commercial Cleaning said it invited Mirren to its office for an interview. When he failed to show up, the company contacted his home where he explained he didn’t know how to get the the office.
Spotless gave him directions — just a 20-minute car ride away. He still didn’t show up.
The teen told the newspaper he still thinks he’s right — that he was discriminated against because of his age.
A spokeswoman for tribunal calls this the most bizarre case its ever been involved in.

What…he expected them to send a limo to come get him and drive him to the interview? He thought he should get the job because he THOUGHT about possibly working there? Does he think he should get a paycheck even though he never bothered to show up…just because he wants the money? I’m surprised they bothered to call his home when he didn’t show up the first time and that they actually gave him a 2nd chance to interview. If he couldn’t be bothered to show up for the interview, what makes anyone think he would bother to show up for work? This is one spoiled, unreasonable kid who needs to grow up, unless there’s a lot more to the story that isn’t being revealed here.

I agree with R.B., why did they call him in the first place when he didn’t show up? If it’s not important enough for you to show up for the interview then you don’t really want the job.

R.B. & Peg – Yes, it sounds like they went to a reasonable length to assist the kid even (rather than the kid calling in saying he needed help finding the place) and he still didn’t bother? Spoiled and unreasonable is definitely the case unless, as R.B. said, there’s a great deal more that’s not mentioned.

uuummmm…Hello? Map quest, GPS, calling and asking for directions! The kid just didn’t want the job but maybe this is a situation where his parents are making him get a job and it looks good that he has an interview (to the parents) but he doesn’t go because he doesn’t want the job, then tell the parents “I didn’t get the job…because”. Everybody is happy, until he probably gives some lame excuse to someone on why he didn’t get it and Bam! Their telling him to file a suit against them….seen it before in other situations.
He’s a kid and he wants to just go to school and hang with his friends…case closed!
