The city of Zhengzhou in China has issued an edict that government employees should not wear any “unnatural hair styles” or clothes that are too colorful.

The new regulations say city officials should make sure their clothing stays away from bright color schemes.

If colorful is wrong, what’s right? Neat and orderly, according to the rules.

“Don’t just dress any which way” the regulations demand.

Officials say no specific breach of workplace clothing etiquette triggered these rules. The purpose is to “improve the image of our public servants” according to wire service reports.

That’s because one of its employees was caught not wearing any clothes on the job.

Sheriff’s deputies were making a routine bar check at the Cabin Tavern when they allegedly found bartender Janet Brannon working in the nude.

Brannon was the only employee at the bar, so the deputies closed it down and arrested her on an outstanding warrant, according to the Alton, IL, Telegraph.

She also faces a public indecency charge. Local authorities will also seek charges against the bar’s owners.

If HR took a poll today asking whether employees would like to extend casual Fridays to cover every day of the summer, there’d be a lot of support for dressing down at work for three months.

Just such an arrangement may be coming to United Nations headquarters in New York City.

The U.N. has told its New York staff to ditch wool business suits for August as its thermostats will be turned up to 77 degrees in most places, except 75 degrees in conference rooms.

It’s a trial run of a program that the U.N. hopes will save $100,000 in energy costs.

If the trial is a success, thermostats will be turned down 5 degrees in winter. A year-round change could save $1 million.

The U.N. is encouraging “business casual dress” without coats and ties.

Of course, the U.N. is known for negotiating difficult situations around the world. We wonder how they’ll negotiate the definition of “business casual” for employees.

Has your company turned up thermostats and loosened the dress code this summer? If so, let us know about it in the comments section below.

Many popular U.S. TV reality shows got started in Europe. Here’s one reality show, based in the workplace, that we hope doesn’t make the trip across the Atlantic.

The British show, still in development, is called Naked Office.

Yep, it’s your worst fear: The show asks employees to show up for work nude for one day.

The hunt for companies willing to participate is still going on (we can only hope they won’t find enough takers).

Office employees (gee, nothing in manufacturing or retail?) will be interviewed to gauge their thoughts about nudity (at home, OK; at the office, NO WAY).

Then, some employees will participate in art classes with unclothed models to help them get used to public nudity.

The last step in the BBC show: Employees participate in a “Naked Friday.”

The purpose of the program is to analyze attitudes toward nudity including the role of clothing in office hierarchy.

The show’s producers promise the day wold be “very productive … as well as a day to remember.” (Yeah, we’d be a lot less likely to leave our cubicles.)
