Sometimes, on-the-job training is a valuable resource. But this story proves it isn’t a one-size-fits-all method.

An air traffic controller in Florida is on leave while federal aviation investigators try to figure out why four flights were rerouted, reportedly to test the skills of a trainee.

The National Air Traffic Controllers Association says what happened needlessly endangered lives, according to First Coast News.

A local union representative says an air traffic control supervisor ordered the planes rerouted as a test for the trainee.

The supervisor allegedly ordered controllers to leave the flights “stacked” so the trainee could practice “unstacking them.”

The Federal Aviation Administration says the flights weren’t detoured into thunderstorms. However, the union says there was bad weather in the area.

The FAA says the flights, destined for Orlando, arrived without incident.
