‘I wanna be a councillor — what do they do?’

For just a moment, think about how kids choose what they want to be when they grow up. Often, they don’t really understand what’s involved in the job.

Turns out, adults often have similar misconceptions about the roles played by certain employees.

More than half of residents surveyed in London, England, had misconceptions about the roles played by their elected councillors.

Despite that, 25% of those surveyed think they’d like to be one.

About half wrongly believe the police are run by councillors. Over half had the misconception that councillors must represent a political party.

Such glamorous activities as trash collection, local taxes and leisure services are among areas overseen by councillors.

There are 20,000 councillors in Britain and they’re elected by the communities they serve.
