Bad idea: Selling drugs while in work uniform

You know they’re out there: Employees who conduct their own small business activities while on the clock for your company. That alone is frustrating, but it’s another thing entirely when the side business is illegal.

Ronald Berkan was a postal carrier in Oregon. His side business: selling pot while delivering the mail in his postal uniform.

Now Berkan will wear a different uniform: an orange prison jumpsuit.

He’s been sentenced to 18 months in jail after he pleaded guilty to distribution of marijuana to an underage person, The Portland Oregonian reported.

The Drug Enforcement Administration investigated for 11 months after receiving a tip about a uniformed mail carrier selling pot.

A camera was planted in his truck, and videotape appeared to show him selling marijuana to 10 people. However, the tape couldn’t verify he was selling the drug.

Finally, a 19-year-old told police he’d been buying pot from a U.S. Postal worker for two years. That clinched the case.

  1. Steve Fraser Says:

I had a contract employee (sales) running their own business during the day. I actually knew of this other business, but was assured that my sales efforts would take precedence. Of course, we know how that turned out.

After I gave him an ultimatum that I would need a 100% effort on his part (after a month of no sales), he told me he couldn’t promise 100% effort, nor even 50%.

    Bye Bye!
